Indonesia Declines Ratification of Tobacco Convention

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian Minister of Industry Fahmi Idris said
that the Indonesian government was unwilling to ratify the World Health
Organization (WHO) convention on tobacco management. If the WHO convention
applies, this will cause difficulties for tobacco companies and small- and
middle industry involved in the tobacco business. "The industry workers supply
95 percent of domestic tobacco needs," stated Idris on Friday (06/12).
As a result, the Indonesian government will keep urging for a Health Protection
Law ratification. Indonesia has also had the government regulation which
protects society from the dangers of smoking. (Jojo Raharjo-Tempo News Room)
