Cuban medical brigade returns from helping Indonesia
THE Cuban medical brigade that provided aid for three months in Indonesia after
an earthquake devastated that Asian nation has now returned home, to be
welcomed by Health Minister José Ramón Balaguer.
Member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Cuba, Balaguer and other
party and state leaders waiting at the José Martí international airport
welcomed the 135 health professionals, all members of the Henry Reeve
International Medical Contingent specializing in situations of disaster and
serious epidemics.
"Appreciation and affection are the sentiments that you all are able to
generate, all of you are an arch of triumph, an army of ethical men and women
with profound morals, who rescue and save lives," stated Balaguer, who
reflected on how the world could be if everyone acted as they did.
Balaguer emphasized the significance of the example of this 'white-coated army'
and stressed that their work provides inspiration for the life and recuperation
of President Fidel Castro, creator of the Henry Reeve brigade, formed August
2005 and whose first mission was in Pakistan.
He expressed the pride of the country's leadership in the evaluation by
Indonesian authorities regarding the commendable humanitarian and altruistic
labors undertaken by this force of general practitioners, orthopedists,
surgeons, intensive care providers, anesthesiologists, radiologists,
pediatricians, obstetricians, nurses and technicians, among others.
Dr. Luis Oliveros, head of the brigade stationed in two field hospitals donated
by Cuba, explained that in three months 103,000 patients were attended,
including 773 major operations, 2,436 minor operations and 34 births with zero
infant mortality, as well as 10,000 immunizations against tetanus.
Of the 135 members of the brigade, 96 fulfilled missions in Pakistan, noted
Oliveros who, on behalf of the group, expressed wishes for Fidel's prompt
recovery and their willingness to go anywhere in the world where they are
needed. (AIN)
