44 Indonesians among sex trafficking victims to Japan last year
TOKYO (AFP): Japan reported a record number of foreign sex slaves for the
second consecutive year in 2005, with Indonesians making an appearance in
significant numbers for the first time, police said Thursday.
The National Police Agency reported that 117 foreign women were recovered in
2005, up by 40 from the previous year and the highest number since it began
compiling statistics in 2001.
Indonesians were the largest group of victims with 44 women recovered in 2005,
up from zero in 2004.
Women from the Philippines were the second biggest group with 40 victims, up
from 13 in 2004, followed by 21 from Thailand, down from 48.
The numbers are believed to represent only a fraction of the problem in Japan,
where prostitution is illegal but widely tolerated.
Japan last year began imposing tighter requirements for visas given to
"entertainers" after a damning 2004 study by US State Department found that
many women who arrived legally were drawninto sex slavery.
The new rules, which require greater documentation for entertainment visas,
sparked protests outside the Japanese embassy in Manila amid fears that
remittances, a valuable source of revenue for the Philippines, would be
slashed.
