Hello Kevin1
I suppose this is easily answered: For now continue with git. Advantages; It's always brand new and you can even choose a specific development branch, if there's something new and you're interested. Besides, it's a simple enough command, once you've got the git tree started. Debian package for starting: I suppose it's a nice idea, since it will automatically install all the dependencies. Meaning ecasound and probably other utilities as well as the Perl modules needed. But even from there I would continue with git. Since once install, you have all the dependencies and then can go the new route.
  Warmly yours
            Julien
