Thanks for your suggestions.
I did try the SMC reset, but no change.
I am looking for a third party one - thanks for the link.
I also saw that story about the recall. The cycle count is under 300.
There is an application cocnutbattery that is helpful:

I may try Apple and see what they say.
In the meantime, going to borrow a friends Macbook battery and see how that
works.
