I suspect it's an encoding/decoding issue. Binary files, like .doc files from 
Word, are encoded into plain ASCII text for email transmission. There are 
several methods used to do this, and if the recipient is not set up to use the 
method that the message is sent in, they will receive what appears to be a 
long random jumble of text (which could be mistaken for "machine code", as it 
may look similar to what you might get if you tried to open a binary file in a 
text editor) instead of a usable file. An encoding/decoding issue would 
explain why both Word and .zip files are affected for certain users, since 
both are binary formats. You might want to investigate that area a little and 
see what you come up with.
