I'm not sure, but I think it's possible that the spelling and grammar
options aren't installed....but I haven't used 97 in a long time, so I could
be wrong. You can go to your control panel>add/remove programs and click on
Office 97 and see if any parts show as not installed yet (?)

Or, it's also possible that your spellchecker is corrupt. If so, you can
delete the spelling folder from the registry and that should fix it, if that
is the case.

Here's the instructions for doing that:

This is very safe if you do it EXACTLY as I say:

Close Word first.

Go to your Start button and click on Run. In the Run box, type regedit.
When the registry editor comes up, in the pane on the left, click on the
plus signs beside the keys to navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools. In this
Proofing Tools folder, you will see four subfolders: Grammar, Hyphenation,
Spelling, and Thesaurus. Right click on
the Spelling folder and choose Export. A box will come up that looks like
the
Save As box. Choose to save it to your desktop so you can find it if you
need to. Then name it something like WordSpellcheckerKey or something and
export it to
your desktop. Then right click on the Spelling folder inside the registry
editor again and choose Delete. Then close the registry editor and open
Word again and see if your spellchecker works. If it does, then it worked
and you can delete the reg file you put on your desktop. If the problem
isn't fixed, then you can just close Word and double click on this reg file
and it will put your registry right back to the way it was before you
deleted the Data folder.

This should do it for you. Let me know how it goes.

Oh...and if it works, be SURE to delete that registry key on your desktop
cuz if you accidentally double click it in the future, Word's spellchecker
will
be messed up again.

Subject: [mso] Word 97 Spell Checker?

Hi Group,

I installed office 97 on my daughter's computer. She finished a school
paper and I asked her if she used the spell check to check over and fix any
typos and grammer errors. She said it wasn't working and sure enough it
isn't. It's actually greyed out. I tried clicking on the assistant to get
help. I didn't get the box that you type in to ask a question. Basically
what I'm asking is if word is corrupt, do I need to uninstall and do another
installation or can this problem be easily corrected?

TIA,

P.
