I was just gonna say... but thanks for the thought Ray. I have a
temporary work around but I fully intend to get to the bottom of this
problem.  I'm pretty sure though that like and not like in whatever form
cannot be used in merge fields. I suspect wild cards may also be an
issue. hmmmph!  /g

Sorry, James. Word fields, unlike Access, don't recognise LIKE as an
operator.
