What I've done that may be of help is to simply lengthen that one line where
the word Mayan is sitting. To do this, click on the line where the word
begins, then go up to the ruler and click on and drag the triangle on the
far right end of the ruller. Drag it just a bit more to the right.
This little trick fixes a myriad of my problems.....

How can I turn off hyphenation for just one word in my document?
The document already exists, and almost all of it was hyphenated using Tools
|
Language | Hyphenation... then checkmarked "Automatically hyphenate
document".
Now I have added the word "Mayan" (the ancient civilization). Word 2002
insists on breaking the word as "May-an".
I selected only that part of the text that includes the word "Mayan" and
unchecked "Automatic hyphenation". When I later checkmarked "Automatic
hyphenation" for a different part of the document, the word "Mayan" was
again
broken up.
Another failed idea was to select the text and click on "Manual...". That
did
remove the hyphen from "Mayan" temporarily, but it went back in when I
answered "No" to Word's offer to hyphenate the rest of the document.
I even created a separate section for this one paragraph, but Word still
hyphenates "Mayan".
How can I curb the appetite of the greedy hyphenation monster?
