[mso] Re: Standard Dates in Excel

Dates are stored as numbers in Excel. The conversion of entered dates to
numbers is correct and automatic.

So, if you format the cell for example as "General" you will see a number
like 40296, which is 28/4/2010.

I'm not sure I'm with you on this. What do you mean by "assigned column"?

The entry bar should show the date in approximately the same format as the
cell itself is displaying. In particular, if the cell is displaying just a
number like 40295, then the entry bar should show that number too.

Do you mean that you have a formula that takes the value of the cell with
the date in it and that this formula is displaying the number? If so, then
you need to format that cell to display a date too.

Not sure what you're actually doing here, but it should definitely work.

Try the following (assuming you're using Excel 2003) in a new worksheet

Type 40296 into A1 and hit Enter.
Re-select A1 if the selection moves after you hit Enter.
On the menu, select Format / Cells - the General format should be
highlighted.
Click on Date category and click on OK.
A1 should now be showing 28/04/2010 or 04/28/2010 or whatever is your
default date format.
The entry bar should also be showing the contents in date format.

The entry bar will always show you a full numeric date, I think, regardless
of the specific date format you're displaying the cell in.

Remember that dates and times are just numbers in Excel. You need to format
the cells to display them as dates/times as appropriate.
