Right-click the folder, click Properties, then click the Administration
tab.
I've tried it your way too but it sorts all my folders the same way and
doesn't give me the option to apply it only to the current folder.
It's very frustrating!

|I'm using 2002 and I'm a little confused. When I right-click
|on a folder I don't see anything about views..?? Anyway, the
|way I do it is to be in the folder, then select View, Current
|View, Customize Current view. The view changes for the active
|folder, but not the rest. If you want, you can save it (View,
|Current View, Define views).

|This is what I attempted the other day. I *think* what you
|are suggesting as a fix would affect all folders. I don't
|want to apply the same view to all folders, so I right-clicked
|on my MSO folder and tried to apply a custom view to that.
|Except it aint workin :(

|Anyway...I was just sorting the tons of posts from this week
|in Outlook...when it dawned on me that I was doing something
|that I believe someone had once asked about. Don't know if
|there was ever an answer...so here's one.

|Problem:

|If you attempt to sort all the posts in Outlook (or any email)
|by SUBJECT by clicking on the subject column button at the top
|of via the View ....(depending on version, next
|menu)...Sort/by Subject...they will get mixed up cos' an email
|with the subject of:

|...will not be sorted in the same alpha order as one with the
|subject of

|To fix this...click View (versions have different items here,
|I believe)...but move to the CUSTOM view. Then click on GROUP
|and GROUP by Subject...rather than using the group default of
|auto group and then using SORT by subject.
|
|When you GROUP them...the one with and without the RE and
|FORWARD are ignored and the subject text itself will be
|grouped. This will help you keep the question with the
|subsequent answers.
