I don't believe this problem is really related to Word, but related to your
network settings or possibly your antivirus program.

You see, when you open a document in Word, it DOES create a temp
file...because you are NOT actually editing the original file...you are
editing a copy of it, or rather a TEMPORARY version of it. That's the whole
reason for the temp file. Word shows you the content and you make edits.
When you SAVE it...THEN the changes made to the temp version are copied to
the original file and the temp version is deleted...or SHOULD be if it is
working right.

And since you cannot delete the temp file of an open document, I'll assume
that when you say you have to delete the temp file, you mean that it is
remaining on the server after the original user saves/closes the document.

Then when someone else tries to open the folder...the server and/or Word
(??? Not quite sure what's up at this point) is trying to decipher what's up
with the temp files. Yes, they DO slow down systems if they start to
accumulate, which is why we tell people to delete temp files that got locked
into their folders when they crashed at some point and didn't remove those
files.

But, assuming your users are not crashing a lot...then these files SHOULD be
getting closes out when the file is closed. If they are not...you might have
some type of permission issue going on with your server that is not allowing
these files to be properly deleted.

Also...this was a big problem with an antivirus program called Inoculate (or
some such name). It was leaving lots of goofy temp files on servers and
causing Word access issues. Not sure if other A/V apps can cause this.

Finally, what version of Word are you using. I know you said 2000, but what
EXACT version of 2000. I ask because the original 2000 also had a problem
with renegade temp files...a problem that was fixed in subsequent service
packs. So you need to be updated to the latest, SP3, to ensure it works as
it should.

Subject: [mso] Problem with Word files

We are using Microsoft Word 2000 on a server running Windows 2000 Server
operating system. All computers hooked to the server are either XP Home
Edition or XP Professional. We have folders set up on the server as
follows: ABC, DEF, GHI, etc. In these folders are files beginning with the
appropriate letter. Our problem is. If someone in the office has a file
open in one of the folders and someone else at another computer tries to
access that folder on the server it takes a long, long time for the access
to occur. Example: I have a file open named AppleJim, which is in the
folder ABC. If someone else tries to save a file to the ABC folder it takes
a long time (minute to 2 minutes) to open this folder. The reason is the
temporary file that is created my Word. If we erase the temporary file we
have no problem. This problem does not occur with any other programs we are
using.

This problem started about 6 months ago when we did an update of all our
Office 2000 products. We have had no success in correcting this problem.
Any suggestions?
