Actually, those are not incorrect HTML codes. It's just part of the next
code that is split due to page wrapping.

The code is a style span and yes, there are a LOT of them...to many IMO. But
if you look closely, you can see that the next like is just the rest of the
code.

Here's an example...

<h2><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Berylium;language:EN'>From the
desk of Sunny Franklin</span><span
  style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";language:EN'>,
Assistant Principal</span></h2>

But notice that this...

</span><span
  style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";language:EN'>

...is simply the closing of the previous span and the start of a new span.
If the line is pulled up...it's fine.

</span><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans
MS";language:EN'>

But SPAN in HTML is like a character style in Word. It sits on top of the
paragraph style. However, this really has nothing to do with her problem.

The REAL problem is that there is a MESS of table layering formatting...all
over the place. This comes from a novice trying too hard to create a
customized masterpiece. A user will pile stuff on and on and on without
removing other fixes. Then, as you can see in this web page I put together
with images from her page dissected a bit...you end up with a ton of stuff
piled on top of each other.

(Note that I'll remove this page in a few days.)

Hope this helps!

Well...if you want to fix up the code, I would start by removing all of
those "half tags" I mentioned. If you view the code on that page, most of
the lines end with open tags..... Like </span><span and </pre><pre

Html tags should have an opening tag like <body> and a closing tag like
</body>

On this page, you will see opening tags that look ok, but the closing tags
are followed by those weird half tags.

So, if you want to fix it, look for a paragraph like <span> my name is
Linda</span><span

And remove the last "<span" so it says <span>my name is Linda</span>

I'm not really sure how <span> tags work....I know Word and Publisher add
them, but I've never seen them used by any other webpage editor....but I
know if I copy something from Word into one of my web pages, I get all those
<span> tags and it screws up the spacing on the page big time.....so I
believe those <span> tags are part of the problem...especially if there's an
opening <span tag....the browser doesn't know where it ends becuz that
closing > is missing

But, there are a LOT of them in that page...so be prepared to spend some
time cleaning it up. But, I'm betting this is the problem....when your
browser tries to read <span, it doesn't know what to do with it.....I'm
surprised the page is viewable at all. And the reason you are seeing less
problems with Internet Explorer is becuz it's more forgiving than the other
browsers. That's why Firefox looks even worse. I'd imagine, with something
like Netscape or Opera, it probably looks even worse than Firefox (I'm
wondering if Netscape can even open the page, actually.)

If you had FrontPage 2003, it has a utility that searches for bad tags and
lets you remove them....I'm not sure if Dreamweaver has something like that
though.

Good luck.

(and thanks for trimming that post....now if we can only get Dian to do the
same thing LOL)

Now, I have to crawl back in my writing hole.....I'm up to Chapter 8 on this
book....only four chapters to go....wooooohoooooo!!!

Dian, I agree that Publisher has flaws, like many of Microsoft Office
products, but the fact that the newsletter comes out great on paper, I'd
liketo be able to use something that I can then put up on the web too. I've
hear this over and over from people about how the codes get messed up in
Word, etc. Got any suggestions on a product that works for both, print and
html?

It's also weird that parts of it are just perfect and then the one area
wherethey go wacko.

I can also use CuteFTP to upload and see if it was Dreamweaver that made it
aprobem but I think it's probably Publisher and how it converts it. So if
wecan figure out what code I need to correct when it converts it, then I can
just do that every month, if I have to.

Thanks for trying to make my life a bit easier...~Sue
