I know watcha mean Diane. My approach to these kinds of bosses is to give
them what they want then little by little find ways to sacrifice my
involvement in routine maintenance stuff which I'm terrible at and which I
really, really hate. I set stuff up and make sure it's working well then
start handing off bits here and there to others. At some point, I manage to
tell the boss what a terrific job the other person is doing and how much I
appreciate all the support, yada, yada. Everyone ends up looking good and I
get to move on to more interesting work.

Subject: [mso] Master PPT File vs. Separate Sub Files (was Re: Limit to
number of slides in PowerPoint 2000?)

<< Tell us more. What is the advantage of doing it this way, instead of
having each "sub file" << as a separate file?

The owner of the project that uses these PowerPoints is insisting on this
for version control. She has assigned one person (me) to be the only person
to touch what is called the "Master" file. When someone creates a new
presentation that could be of benefit to others, they are required to put it
in a folder called "New Slides" on the server. I monitor the New Slides
folder and update the master file by appending the new file to the existing
master file. Also, if someone wants to edit a slide, they make a copy of
it, place it in an "Edited Slides" folder on the server. I then update the
master file with the changed slide(s). Each time we make a change to the
master file we do a "Save As" changing the file name (which includes a date)
to reflect the date I make the changes. Lastly, I maintain a
history/version log in Word which is in the master slides folder which
details the changes as they're made.

This system seems to be an attempt on the project owner's part to create a
manual version of what I use for the help files I author...SourceSafe. It
all seems a bit high maintenance to me...sometimes I feel as though I spend
more time following the system than doing the work. But after much
discussion and alternatives posed, it's what the boss wants...she simply has
a high comfort level with knowing everything is in one file in one place
with only one person touching it.

Diane
