Word defaults to saving the backup in the same folder as the file you are
backing up. You will only be able to choose your own location for
Autorecover files. You need to go to Tools> Options> and click file
locations.

For anybody who's interested, the following works in Word XP and no doubt
one of our gurus will confirm if it exists in previous versions:

To locate a file in a different folder from the active one:
Go back to the previous drive, folder, or Internet location
On the Standard toolbar, click Open .
In the Open dialog box, click the Back button .

The name of the previous drive, folder, or Internet location appears in
the ScreenTip when you rest the mouse pointer on the Back button.

Subject: [mso] Location of automatically backed up Word documents

Is there any way to control this? Seems like it's set to save the copy in
the same directory as the file itself, but I'd like to save them in
separate directories.
