Hi Kevin ... you need to change the subject line when you reply to a thread
and your reply has nothing to do with that topic ... your reply was a Word
question, but the subject line referred to Excel.

Anyway, I have no idea why your Word docs aren't opening in Word when double
clicked ... I also don't know what you did that is causing FrontPage to try
to install. Do the Word docs have a .doc extension?

The only thing I can suggest is you try to re-register Word and see if that
fixes it ... Make sure Word is closed and go to the Start button and click
on Run ... in that box type winword /r (note the space!) and press Enter ...
you should see the installer doing it's thing ... after that, reboot your
computer, then try double clicking on a Word doc on your desktop again.

If that doesn't fix it, then I'm not sure what else to suggest ... I assume
you found this group becuz you tried everything on my Word Troubleshooting
page and none of that fixed your problem. If that is not the case, I'd
suggest you try all of the normal.dot fixes I have on that page.

Other than that, the only thing I can figure is there's something wrong with
your file associations ... Make sure Word is closed, then open My Computer
and click on the Tools menu, then Folder Options ... click on the File Types
tab and scroll thru the list to find .doc and click on it to select it,
then click on the Advanced button ... in there, find Open and make sure it
is bold (which means it's the default for double clicking) ... if it's not
bold, click on it and click the button that says Set Default .... then with
Open still selected, click on the Edit button ... in there, where it says
DDE Message, be sure it says this exactly
 [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
... Application should say Winword ... and the other two boxes below that
should be empty. If you have to change any of that, then click the OK
buttons until you get out of all those boxes, then reboot your computer and
try double clicking the files again ... if that doesn't fix it, then I'm
clueless ... sorry and good luck.

Subject: RE: [mso] Re: Protect cells withing a worksheet

Hi

I've just subscribed to freelists but I can't work out how to use it.

My problem is that I can't seem to open word files directly from my desktop
any more. Whenever I click on a file, it opens up Word but all I can see is
a grey page. There's no document at all - not even a blank one.

If I open word, and then, open the file, it's fine - I get the full text.

Just before this problem happened, I noticed that every time I turned on my
computer or tried to open word, the computer tried to automatically install
Microsoft front page. But it can't do this because I don't have Microsoft
Front Page.

Are the two things connected?

Thanks

Kevin
