The easy way to do this is to start by making a rectangular autoshape (make sure you have the drawing toolbar up.) The hit the arrow next to the fill icon, amd choose fill effects. Set your gradient effect. Now, send to graphic to the back layer so that the worksheet text shows on top of it. (Draw - order - send to back) Resize the rectangle so it goes under your full table.
