The easy way to do this is to start by making a rectangular autoshape
(make sure you have the drawing toolbar up.) The hit the arrow next to
the fill icon, amd choose fill effects. Set your gradient effect.

Now, send to graphic to the back layer so that the worksheet text shows
on top of it. (Draw - order - send to back) Resize the rectangle so it
goes under your full table.

I know how to shade cells in excel so that they are a particular color
(blue, green, pink, etc) but I was wondering if it's possible to have
shading with a gradient effect like you can in word when you use the
paint
bucket in the drawing toolbar? You can do this to rectangles, squares,
autoshapes, etc. I want to create a gradient effect in a table of excel
data.
