Hi Renee. Did you actually do that exercise? I think if you do the
exercise, the difference will be obvious. That exercise shows how using the
SUBTOTAL function prepares the data, so the Auto Outline will create
collapsible groups based on the subtotals. If you only used Auto Sum, the
Auto Outline wouldn't recognize the subtotals. As I said in the book,
personally I prefer the Subtotal command over the SUBTOTAL function ... but
I only show you that in case you get a workbook where the SUBTOTAL function
has already been used on the data and now you want to create the collapsible
groups like the Subtotal command does. If you look at the cells in that
spreadsheet, you will see that the ones totaled with AutoSum do not create
collapsible groups like the ones that were summed using the SUBTOTAL
function do.

Personally, the subtotal command is much easier to deal with than the
SUBTOTAL function and auto outlining, I think.

Hope that explains it. Good luck on your certification!

Subject: [mso] Excel Subtotals

I'm studying Linda's book in preparation for MOS Expert certification in
Excel. In Chapter 7 I'm going over the subtotal function and I can't seem to
see the advantage of using the subtotal function over using Auto Sum, they
seem to do the same thing.
