I've had no problems at all running Office 2000 on Windows XP, so I'm not
sure why you did. However, I have not tried running Office 97 on Windows XP
(I've heard rumors that Word 97 has problems on Windows XP, but hadn't heard
anything about Excel until Errol posted this)

Errol -
When I purchased a new computer which came loaded with XP Home addition, I
was running MS Office 2000, the next upgrade from Office97. I was unable to
open help files in MS Word, had trouble running Power Point and in general,
felt that I was on shaky ground. Look at the reward system. Microsoft
introduces an upgrade of Office with the introduction of XP. What's in it
for Microsoft to make the new system backward compatible with older
software? So I upgraded. My daughter, a recent graduate of Texas A&M was
also given the opportunity to upgrade for $5/disk from Microsoft through an
academic program. This program is extended to all college students. She
upgraded to Office XP for $10 = 2 disks. In defense of Microsoft, the XP
Office version is definitely an improvement over 97 in a number of ways. I'd
bet that this upgrade offer is available to the students at your school.
One thing will always be true, Microsoft will call the tune.
