Thanks for the response Dave. I don't know if the customer also had Excel 2007, but I think I've identified the problem. The original file had a number of named ranges which pointed to spreadsheets in other workbook files, that had not also been provided. I believe that when he opened the file, Excel prompted him asking if he wanted to update the file he was working on from the external sources. He, not being aware that spreadsheets and workbooks can refer to resources in other files, choose to update the file, thereby corrupting the worksheet he was working on, causing him the problem I described. Someone else retrieved the original file and worked on it with successful results by not allowing Excel to update from the external resources.
