Hi Dick If you have a doc file Word 2010 should be able to open it. You can then use Save As to save it as either a .doc file or a .docx file by selecting the file type when saving. Similarly with Excel. Xls to xlsx. If you want then to use the newer type files in an older program you will need to have the compatibility pack installed to be able to open them. Do not think that changing the .doc suffix to .docx using rename will work. It will cause problems because the program expects one type of file while the file is actually the other type. If you want to use a file in both systems, it is better to save it as the older type (.doc) and keep it as such.W2010 will then use compatibility options for it and will warn if you try to save it after making incompatible changes.
