One thing you can do also if you store the numbers as test and soemtime do need to use the text numbers as actual numbers is to multiply the field *1 to convert them. I do this quite often. In my regular datafile over which I don't have any control, I have test scores stored as text...makes no sense to me but I've had to learn to work with it. In any query in which I use that value, I simply multiply the field times 1 then peform calculations on that result to come up with averages...for example. /g=20 -----Original Message----- From: James LaBorde [mailto:jlaborde@xxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Thursday, March 03, 2005 07:20 PM To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mso] Re: Access Data Type Definition :VSMail mx1 Christine, The direction you want to go depends on your data. If your data will = =3D never be used in a calculation, I would recommend using Glenda's =3D approach making the field text and create a validation rule and input = =3D mask. If your numbers need to be numbers and will never have leading = =3D zeroes, you will want to take Jim's approach and make them number fields =3D and create validation rules based on that. A good, general rule of = =3D thumb is to not use the number data type if your data will not be =3D calculated. Number fields have problems when storing raw data if you = =3D need things like leading zeroes. There are two fields that are 5 and 6 characters each and the text should be all numbers for each, no letters, no special characters. Is there a way to set the data type for these two fields to a maximum of 5 and 6 characters each and all numbers?
