I came to school as a pianist; Mr. Manley then took me on as an organist. I played organ for a year under him; then Mr. Chard started me on pipe organ, then he switched me to saxophone full time and dropped pipe organ. I used to split the period betwixt the two in the auditorium.

I didn't like piano back than when I thought of piano I could only think of
classical. Just when I started to make noises that resembled musical notes
with the French horn Mr. Chard wanted me to concentrate on playing the
drums. I think if you learn to play cornett you can play other types of wood
wind instruments. I could be wrong but I had a cousin who played one.

Bob, I hated piano! Mom wanted me to be just like Stevie Wonder. She forced
piano and organ on me! Flute was much better! I should have taken French
horn. I might have sounded better than I did with the cornert!

I started out on snare drums moved to base drum & symbols. I started
learning French horn but stayed with drums. I wish I had of taken piano
when it was offered to me in second grade but I wanted guitar & there
wasn't anymore openings. Back then the beattles were the craze &
everyone wanted to be a rock star. Also my dad & uncle played guitar.
Since school I have taken a few guitar lessons, harp lessons &
learned a little about the keyboard.
In
school I was also in bell ringers.

Peg, I remember! You were next to Marcie and I sat next to Al Swain.
Remember the following year, when we were so small that Charlotte
filled in the part with a Yamaha organ? I think we only had nine in
the band and

we still had a music tour n with the orchestra.

I know I was in the orchestra pit in 1969 for the graduation, so
somebody played. Maybe somebody can figure this out.

Hello Steve,
Yes, it is your fellow (or should I say lady?) band mate and yes, I
did play cymbols hahahaha lol. That big ol' bass drum too.
What good old days those were eh? We were all just wet behind the
ears kids and didn't have a care in the world right? And now look
at us all.
Yes, my e-mail says yates but that is the way my friend Billy
Malone set

it
up. My last name is still spelled Yats however.
Thank-you so much for welcoming me to this awesome list. I know I
am going to love being here.
And oh yes, I am very sad today with the news of Larry's passing.
He was such a sweetheart and in my own way, I did love him. More
than he will ever know.

What sad news about Larry.

And, welcome to the list cymbal player from a fellow percussionist. I
wondered who the pyates was that subscribed to the list. I was
thinking Keith Yates, but it is Yats although the email says yates.

Hi John,
I too am in shock at the news of Larry's death. Karla also called
me last evening and told me the news. My heart is heavy today with
such sad news.

Hi all, I just got this info from Karla Fields, but she doesn't
know any more at the moment! Larry Yanchus, class of 70, was
found dead either yesterday or today, by his sister Lynn! As I
said, nothing else is known at this time, but as soon as I find
out any details, I will let you all know! Frankly, I am still in
shock!

take care:
John
