Just to let everyone know, I did run the long version of this on Sunday and all
the trails were in good shape.

I started a bit beyond the pay parking for Thumb Butte (so one of the pullouts
on the left after that) and finished at the Walker Rd parking for Smith Ravine
trail. Total distance was 25.4 miles, but that included a detour into a
campground looking for water for Kiri (none there, but we found some in
Schoolhouse gulch just after that) and also a short detour up to the lookout on
Spruce Mtn.

It was a beautiful day for a long run!

Subject: [prescott-trail-runners] Trail questions - long point-to-point run/hike

I am trying to put together a long, point-to-point run/hike from the Prescott
trails map. Some of these are trails I have run before, but others I have not.
So I wanted to ask you guys if you think these trails are open and runnable.
(Snow levels from what I have seen recently are almost non-existent - but
again, some of these routes I have not run and the trail make I have seems to
only give elevations at peaks.)

Starting at Thumb Butte parking:

Dist Trail
2.0mi Trail 367 - along the road, picking up the Prescott Circle trail at
0.7 miles, then climbs up out of a nice forested valley: 2.0 miles
0.75mi Trail 322 - also part of the PCT, 0.5 miles then turn left staying on
PCT, approx. another 0.25mi, the right onto ???
0.2mi Trail ??? (either 387 or 327), following PCT, then right onto Trail
327, still following PCT
3.6mi Trail 327 - following PCT, to parking at Copper basin Rd.

*** Note - I have not run or ridden on 327 (at least that I can remember) - any
comments?

0.6mi Trail 48 - following PCT, to left turn on trail 9415
5.0mi Trail 9415 - following PCT, to HWY 89 & parking for Schoolhouse Gulch
trail

*** Note - this is another key trail that I have NOT done and it is really the
only connection on my map from Copper Basin to HWY 89. Any comments or info on
this part?

2.6mi Schoolhouse Gulch trail/rd 67 - goes up to the back of Groom Creek -
I have run this
?.?mi Moose trail, Friendly Pines Rd, Spur trail - various back roads in
Groom Creek - maybe 2 miles or so?

*** Note - Haven't run through here, but plan to look at Bing Maps to get a
street printout that's better than the trail map I have

0.?mi Trail 383 - Part of the 383 loop to get me to the parking area on
Senator Hwy for the Trail 307 up to Spruce Mtn - maybe 0.7mi?

*** Note - I can see that 383 seems to cross some of the roads off of "Spur
Trl", but no clue if there will be any signs here so I would know that was the
trail I was looking for...

The total mileage to this point is probably somewhere around 17 to 18 miles. I
will probably get Rick to pick me up here. But if for some crazy reason I
still want more distance and elevation, then I will continue:

3.?mi Trail 307 - First part of the 5.4mi segment that goes to the Spruce
Mountain lookout (going clockwise) - guessing 3.1mi? I have been on this trail,
though not recently
1.?mi Spruce Mtn Road - down from lookout to Smith Ravine trail - maybe
1.2mi?

*** I have not run down this road, but I think it would be pretty
straightforward, and I know where the next trail intersects it.

2.4mi Trail 297 (Smith Ravine Trail) - down to parking at Walker Rd. - I
have done this segment several times as part of a ~13.75 loop from the Lynx
Lake area this year

Total mileage to here would be around 24 to 25 if my guestimates are close. I
don't think I'm ready to go this far yet in the mountains, but if I decide to
go slowly then I might make that distance.

Thanks for any information / comments!

.Terri
