Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A.
Weekend of 13 and 14 June 2000

I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself. Therefore, if
you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant you shall be my special
possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is
mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation."

Brothers and sisters: Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the
appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die
for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find
courage to die.

Paul says, Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person,
though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die."
~Romans 5:6-11

How are these readings challenging? Comforting?

I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself. Therefore, if
you hearken to my voice and keep my covenant you shall be my special
possession, dearer to me than all other people, though all the earth is
mine. You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation." God wants us
to be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. Here we are called to listen to
God's voice and keep His covenant. We don't do that out of strong
suggestion, but as a way of learning and doing what God wants us to learn
and do.

Paul says, Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person,
though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die." In
this Scripture reading we are asked to listen to the voice of God and keep
His covenant. In order to do this we need to put God in our lives every
day. It means the we must listen to what God says and It is often much
more difficult to die for someone else or another person we care deeply
about. It can be more difficult though, than to live as God calls us to
live. One can be a spur-of-the-moment decision. The other calls from us a
long time of faith and prayer and living the way God would have us live.

Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the
ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though
perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. Jesus knew
that we often falter in faith. He wanted to show us how faith can keep our
fear at bay. He wanted to save us from our sins and make sure the gates of
Heaven would be available to us. His words were powerful, but not as
powerful as his action. He fills us with love. He offers us his Body and
Blood that we might become what we eat. We can take this strength home with
us as we strive to live as a member of the Body of Christ. We can pray for
wisdom, as we come to realize that we really have no power over others.
Have a good week!
