Eric,

May I suggest that you chuck up a piece of scrap and
have a go at it.  Screw cutting is surprisingly easy
to learn.  I have a 1943 Wards' Powercraft with
standard change gears and although it gets your hands
very greasy to change them, you can quickly learn how
to set up and when to close and open the half-nuts at
the proper time.
