Hi there Ken,

(Richard here - I will get round to sorting out those drawings of the
electric loco for you at some point, honestly).

One thought I have is this: if you aren't experienced at this kind of
troubleshooting, you can end up having a really frustrating time.

The chances are that it is more than one thing that needs a tweak, and so
just trying one thing at a time (the 'scientific' approach) to see if it
works, will sometimes only yield luck if you have some insight into the
problem; or for certain combinations of problems.

If you aren't a member of the Norwich society, or the North Norfolk
Society, then I would suggest that you join, there is much help to be had
there. If you were to put in an appearance at the Norwich track one sunday
(at Eaton Park) then even if you weren't a member, I'm sure you'd get some
pointers - a guy called John Peterson will almost certainly be able to
tell you what's up, within a matter of minutes; but he is by no means the
only 'regular onsite guru' there.

The only other thing is to follow the approach of changing one thing at
once, so going from running on blocks with air under no load, to running
on a track with load and hot steam is changing too many things.

I'd go from the blocks to running on the Barton House track with the
wheels chocked into their 'on-blocks' position (take it slowly and incase
you derail with no suspension) on the air supply (ie ading load).

I'd also try running on blocks with no load on steam.

I'd also try running on block with air, and with the brakes on lightly to
give some resistance (make sure the brakes don't chance the suspension
position, and perhaps also put some stips of something between brakes and
wheels if you are concerned about rutting the wheels).

Also, you could try pushing the chassis around the track without steam and
air both with the wheels chocked down and not chocked.

Through these kind of tests, you should be able to solve the problem.

Only other thing is, in your e-mail before, you seem to be quite certin
about what isn't causing the problem. Frequently in our line of
troubleshooting work, this is good for not wasting your time on the wrong
lines of enquiry IF you can be dead sure about it. But more often than
not, totally ruling something out before you have solved the problem is a
bad idea, and in a great many cases, I find it turns out to be one of the
things that has been ruled out by someone that is causing problems!

Hopefully this is of some use. Keep us posted on how you get on.

Yours (currently with 3 eight foot sections of multigauge track under
construction in the living room, which is about 24 foot of track more than
my wife wants there to be in there by the end of the evening!),

Rich.
