Hi, Well a 3 jaw self centering chuck manufactured by Pratt Burnerd is certainly worth an attempt a saving. They are expensive enough. Over the years the inside do collect quite a lot of debris and it certainly pays to clean it on regularly times. The swarf collected inside ads a lot to the wear and tear of the parts. Especially the dust of cast iron gets in deep. When I reassemble mine I don't use grease just a bit of sparingly applied oil. Barely enough to give the part an "oily" look. None at all on the gear faces and scroll. By the way never blow out a chuck with high pressure. Most of the time only surface dirt disappears but the real buggers go further inside. If you use air: LOW pressure. As to the reverse set. With a second hand set you are in for trouble. Chucks come with their own sets of yaws. If ordering spare parts there is a number somewhere on the chuck. So a second hand bumpt and battered around in some box at a show and from unknown origin will be pretty useless. As for a "new" set. The price will be next to equal a complete new chuck from far eastern origins. Also consider you are going to use the brand new teeth of the jaws on the "worn" teeth of the scroll. Don't expect to much you could get deeply disappointed. There is a rule in servicing machines: ALWAYS change both gears of a pair. NEVER one. Rotagrip has been mentioned as a source but there are others also supplying them. Last time I looked at the Myford stand they all seemed to come from exotic country's. A tip look round for the one with the least overhang. Quite a few from over there have big bodies and fitted to a back plate tend to end up halfway your lathe bed. Also some "save" on holes for the key. I got one as present and it has only one keyhole. It always stops with the hole at the opposite side, some obscure law of physics?
