Cosford a few years ago. Amazing looking aircraft even now.
Jerome, thanks for the info on the TSR-2. I wasn't aware of it. After
reading the wikipedia entry about it there are some eerie parallels. Based
on the timing it gives me a sense that there was some technology bleed
over. Maybe the legend/rumour of Arrow airfame RL-202 making its way to the
UK has some merit.
If you like reading about aviation history this is an amazing book about that
golden era of UK aviation after the war by a test pilot of the day. It
continues into the TSR 2 era - sadly the UK didn't have the money or the right
political scene to carry through with so much of the development possibilities.

I guess it was hard for me not to be interested in aviation and it's history as
my Dad was in the airforce here from 1940 to 1976 as a mechanic. He was
training in the UK in 1952 at the RAF College at Cranwell and went to
Farnborough that year. His wife to be (my mum) was very concerned after the
DH-110 crash their that killed so many in the crowds.... luckily Dad was their
the day before and saw the DH-110 fly.

There are a handful of saved components (Including an Iroquois engine)
from the program on display at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in
Hamilton.

They do restorations and have quite a flying fleet that you can book a
flight on including one of only two Lancasters still flying. I did a
flight on a Canso for my 50th. Definitely worth doing while these birds are
still airworthy.
A flight in a Cat would be very cool. There is a flying example in NZ that I've
seen a few times. Dad had a bit to do with them and Sunderland's during his
career.
I was amazing a few years ago when they flew that Canadian Lanc to the UK so it
could fly commemoration flights with the flying one there. They even flew them
both with the Vulcan when it was still flying.
I missed seeing the Vulcan fly (after visiting it at its home base) in 2013 as
shortly afterwards discovered it had a fuel leak and it didn't fly again that
season. I was going to go to the next airshow it was to fly at - bugger! So sad
to see it grounded now through politics and the withdrawal of support from
original parts manufacturers. It's still capable of flying but not with current
red tape.
The other great thing about RAF Cosford museum in the UK is that they have all
three of the V-bombers in the same building! The Vulcan there I saw in 1972
when four visited NZ and Dad was at RNZAF Base Ohakea here. One of them was 607
that did the first Falklands raid flight - another amazing story that flight!
The amount of Victor tankers needed for those missions was crazy... and the
tech in the Vulcan was well past it's prime. The chief pilot of 607 on that
mission was for years the chief pilot of the last flying example in the UK also.

And of course now in NZ we have no strike airforce but we are finally going to
replace our original Hercs that we struggle to keep in the air ... with the
