Year ago I rescued a cardinal from a *single strand* of spider web
material. It was long, which, I suppose, gave it some stretchiness. As big
as that bird was, he was unable to generate enough thrust to snap the
strand. If one strand can hold a bird that size, a hummer wouldn't have a
chance against an entire nest. We have a lot of *Argiope* spp. (orb weaver)
spiders on the Coast, and I'm always checking them for hummingbirds and
relocating the occupants if they make their homes too close to one of our
feeders.
