The Jackson CBC took place on Saturday, Dec 30, 2017 around the Ross Barnett
Reservoir. We started the day at 36 degrees and it warmed up to 51° with light
drizzle in the afternoon. Cloudy all day. We tallied 103 species, which was
better than the last couple of years. Our average for the last 27 years (since
1990) is 106 species. Our highest count was 109 species in 2011. We had 24
folks in 11 parties in the field logging 10.5 foot hours, 11 foot miles, 43.25
car hours, and 266.5 car miles. Folks spent 2.75 hrs owling. We had 2 boats
out counting as well. Andrew Whitehurst put his boat in at Tommy’s Trading
Post and went up the Pearl River in search of Wilson’s Snipe. He found 78.
Dr. Jack Ruckdeschel took his boat out on the Rez in the afternoon for 2 hours
looking for ducks and such in the middle of the Rez. He located a first for
the count species: Common Merganser. HIGHLIGHTS:1 Snowy Egret (first ever for
the count)1 Common Merganser seen in middle of Rez by boat. (first ever for the
count)1 Black-crowned Night-Heron seen in the vicinity of Main Harbor Marina.

Eagles: (5 adults and 1 juvenile.) 2 adults seen perched near nest behind
Tommy’s Trading Post, 2 adults seen together at Pelahatchie Bay area, presumed
nesters, and one adult near nest site at Fanning Landing area. Juvenile was
seen at Pearl River WMA. OF INTEREST:Low duck numbers, except for 705
