I set the date a bit too close to Christmas and we had fewerpeople counting
than in the past. We had10 people in the field covering a total of 7
territories logging 34 party hours.Bruce’s party counted 2 territories as did
Mary and Bill. Total number of species for the day was, I amsad to say the
lowest total ever in our count’s history: 82 species. Total species data in
Audubon CBC databaseonly goes back to 1990 but our count started in 1980.
Another low count was 84species in 2012. We have had a total of100-105 species
in 5 other years since 1990.
Notable species were 1 Osprey, 1 House Wren, 2 CommonGround-Doves found by
Bruce’s group. Common Ground-Dove have been seen on 4past counts. Other
notables were 6 Anhinga, 298 White Pelicans, 18 Red-tailedHawks, 2 Hairy
Woodpeckers, 1 Eastern Screech-Owl, 2 Great Horned Owls.
No Shows included: No Fish Crows, No Brown Creeper, NoPurple Finch, No
Orange-crowned Warbler, and Low numbers of all blackbirds,
White-throatedSparrows, No Barred Owl, and only 2 American Goldfinch, the
lowest number ever.
Highlight: first time on the count were 3 WesternSandpipers found by Dave King
and Dr. Ruckdeschel east of Hwy 61 & south ofOpenwood Subdivison in a drawn
down lake bed due to a broken dam.
Please help me recruit some more folks for the count.
