All other users are recommended to use the Wizard to configure AVG-EMS. If you are not successful with configuring the e-mail scanner (e-mails do not work) or you are not sure about the settings, contact please our technical support. ++ ____________________________________________________________ 3 HijackThis log file Analysis http://hijackthis.de/index.php HijackThis is a program used by experienced users in order to detect browser hijackers. It allows you to identify any sort of spyware and malware (as well as some trojan horses and worms). This is achieved by scanning special zones of the registry as well as the hard disk drive, the results being listed in a structured window. Another feature of HijackThis is the creation of a log file, which can be saved as a simple text file and opened by any text editor (notepad as default). Until now, inexperienced users, who could not analyze the log file by themselves, had no other choice than posting it in a specialized forum and to hope that a more experienced user takes some time to analyze it. The script presented on this page is a way to analyze your log without help from the outside: simply copy/paste the content of the log file in the textbox below and hit the analyze button. HijackThis is free and does not need to be installed. It can be downloaded here: http://hijackthis.de/hijackthis_198.zip ++ ____________________________________________________________ 4 Are You a Responsible Computer User? http://www.marthas-web.com/responsible.htm If you answered 'Yes' to this question, how did you determine your answer? Did you say 'Yes' because: 1. You have a virus scanner. 2. You don't open attachments. 3. You don't go to porn sites. 4. What you do on your computer is no one else's concern. OK, now answer these questions. 1. If you are using any version of Microsoft Windows, do you regularly check the Windows Update to make sure you have all of the updates installed that Microsoft has deemed 'Critical'? 2. Is your virus scanner updated? When was the last time you checked to see if your virus definitions are current? 3. Have you checked your computer for spyware? Do you know about spyware? Do you have a program that checks for spyware? 4. Are you aware of the fact that there are countless thousands of computers that are in effect 'Zombies'? These computers are sending out virus, spam emails and anything else the zombie controllers want to send. 5. Are you aware; if you haven't updated Windows; if you don't have an updated virus scanner; if you haven't checked for spyware and you are sending emails to friends and colleagues you are putting their computers at risk as well as your own? If you answered 'No' to any of these questions, you need to give your computing practices a hard look and see what you can do to be able to answer 'Yes, I am a responsible computer user'. SP2 prevents IE users from being subjected to pop-up windows and silent downloads of software from rogue Web sites, among other threats. But what about people who run versions of Windows other than XP? In the previous issue of the Windows Secrets Newsletter, we explained how to give users of Windows 2000 and Me protection from pop-up windows. In this issue, we focus on adding protection against hacked Web sites that can exploit weaknesses in IE to infect your PC. Switching browsers can prevent some but not all problems ++ There is more on the web site. ____________________________________________________________ 7 The Antivirus Defense-in-Depth Guide http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/guidance/avdind_0.mspx The information presented in the Antivirus Defense-in-Depth guide has been updated to reflect the security improvements provided as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2. A number of the features in Windows XP Service Pack 2 have made it more difficult for malware to attack a Windows XP-based computer. While Disk Cleanup automatically starts when the available free space falls below a 3% threshold, you can run it at any time. To do so click the Start button and then choose Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup. When Disk Cleanup launches, select your hard drive from the list box, and then click OK. Disk Cleanup will then perform an assessment of your system and present you with a Files To Remove list box that contains several check boxes, including Temporary Internet Files, Downloaded Program Files, Recycle Bin, and Temporary Files. (You may find other check boxes on your particular system.) Simply select the check boxes corresponding to the folders whose contents you'd like to delete, and click OK. If you select the More Options tab, you'll see two more choices: Windows Setup and Installed Programs, which allow you to easily remove unneeded Windows components or application programs. With this program you could save all data on a partition to a file (such as you could save this file on a CD for example). Then if something goes wrong, you can completely restore the partition from the backup file. You no longer have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch. All you have to do is restore the partition from the backup file and then update any software that was modified since the backup was created. ++ ____________________________________________________________ 11 Paint with 2 Colours If you use Microsoft Paint here is a handy way to use 2 colours with a mouse click With your Paint program open left click on a colour in the paint palette ( that is the area on the bottom of the screen with the various colours displayed) Then right click on a different colour.
