BTW - I just cranked it, and a "find" shows only one copy of Wsock32 (not winsock).DLL in /Windows/System. It's only about 22 kb. If your copy is some 40 kb, I wonder if it's the right one??? or perhaps, that's the problem with mine.... Or you can do an SFC. Or perhaps try reinstalling IE or using LSPFix. --- In mycomputerheadaches@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "Ken Hollingsworth" wrote: Thanks Casper. I hadn't heard of that one, and I'm sorry to say, it didn't do anything when I just tried it. Ken On 4/14/06, casper <officialbizniz@...> wrote: Ken, have you tried using WinsockFix? Ken Hollingsworth <kenholl@...> wrote: I'm attempting to clean out an old eMachine with Win 98 on it. When I got it, it would connect to the net, and other computers on my LAN. The complaint was viruses, and a general tune-up, updates, etc.... I downloaded many Windows updates, downloaded AVG free, and at some point in that process, and after rebooting many times - I now get an error when I try to connect - IPCfgDLL.DLL is linked to missing Wsock32.DLL - I find both files in place in the /Windows/system folder where they are supposed to be. Even though I can't connect to the net - I can connect to the LAN sporadically - sometimes not. The machine had 64mb of Ram, and I added 64 - it now runs pretty good, other than failing to connect to the net. Any suggestions before I re-install 98? I don't think the machine is strong enough for XP. Ken Hollingsworth Don't mistreat any foreigners who live in your land. FTP Have you tried it? I plan to update a website in the next couple of weeks. I will be uploading one .js file and some .html I may even send up a test gif and test jpg just to see how it does. If I get any errors I will make note here, if not cool. The one issue I did find is that it does not have an auto file type detection. But as long as you set to upload as binary add your ASCII extensioins to the always send as ASCII then no issues so far. I found this little gem on a website called http://www.portablefreeware.com/ It is really cool. They list hundreds of programs they consider portable. They list on the site where the settings are stored if in the registry or in the program folder. Only a very few listed on the site store in the registry and they only list them if they have limited registry intrusion and are worth considering as portable. This site is now in my favorites list. Press F2 to run Setup. Press F1 tol oad default values and continue. Knowing nothing about Setup, I pressed F1. This popup window came up - C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\Zone Alarm\zclient.exe There was a white cross/multiplication sign inside a red button. Validation failed for C:\WINDOWS\system32\VSINIT.dll. You re probably missing a necessary root certificate. What does this mean and what should I do? Please help. Till the point when I shut down the machine last night, nothing untoward had happened nor did I load any new programme? Many thanks in advance. Warm regards, Ricky. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ see the Yahoo home page http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mycomputerheadaches/ See the self help page here //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/webpage?webpage_id=mch
