To allow the wireless networking features to work, all you need do is turn on airport in your configurations. You won't be able to do anything with it until you're actually within range of a wireless network, which should automatically notify you that it is available. Then, you simply select whether or not you wish to connect to it, and that's it. If it's a password protected network, you'll be asked for the password (it won't ask for the type, it already knows that) and then you'll get your ip directly from the dhcp server of the wireless network.

It really is as simple as that.
You can of course configure things manually if so desired, but rarely is that level of detail necessary. As long as you have airport turned on, you need do nothing else until you are near a wireless network.
