I might be wrong, but I seem to remember that by default, your mac will try to share files by using the afp protocol, which won't work with windows machines. If you want windows machines to be able to connect to your mac, you need to activate file sharing and check your account as David said, then you need to click the options button and check the box for using smb. Haven't done this in a while so I'm not sure if it's called options or something similar...
