Bob,I figured it was a mouse thing. If you haven't already, about the best I can offer is set verbosity to low. I'm not sure what you mean by welcome dialogue but if it is the one that tells you you can learn about voiceover and to press v if you just want to run vo without the practice, you can turn that off in the vo utility in the general category but you have seen this in your wanderings.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to see well enough to navigate the screen by moving the cursor with a multi button mouse. The buttons are set to zoom in and out, turn VO on and off, read selected text in addition to their usual tasks. The problem occurs when I use the mouse to move across the desktop.
'm partially sighted. I use voiceover for most of my reading and use "Speak selected text" to read large blocks of type and documents. I am able to navigate most of the mac by sight. Snow Leopard is speaking more text than I like. For example, after booting, voiceover reads the welcome and the name of the first item on the desktop. Then moving the cursor across a desktop item causes Voiceover to read the name of the hard drive and all desktop items in alphabetical order. My Leopard clone does not do this and is easier for me to use. Does anyone know how to silence the extra talking. I have played long and hard with the preferences without finding a solution.Thank you,
