Chris,I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I had exactly the same problem. After a software update, maybe coincidence, I couldn't quit I mail. I had to force quit it all the time. I rang applecare and after three days of phone calls they told me to do a complete re- install which I did and then the installation stopped and I couldn't remove the disc. I then arranged to take my mac into a apple shop for a genius to look at it. I am in Manchester, England |They said they would fix it that evening; five days late rthey said it was ready. They had to do an archive re-install. fortunately i did not lose any data.

This didn't work either. I had used the Command+w to close the windowbefore I wrote to the list and that remains useless. The Command+~ moved meto the Finder and then back to Mail in its still hung up state.Rebooting, restarting, everything I've tried keeps this evil message atop the pile when I open Mail and I still cannot find anything to do with it.Grrrr... Try command-w to close the window. If that doesn't work, then try command-~ (tilde) to switch to another window, at least then you can continue using mail, regardless of the state of that window. I opened the message, read its contents and tried to delete it. Deleting didn't work with the keystroke, going to the toolbar and choosing delete or hitting the close button. When I tried to shut down, I got an error that said I had to force quit mail first so I did and it restarted. I restarted Mail after it rebooted and was faced with the same email and the same "no way out" state. I tried a few more times to shut down and do a few other things but, alas, all has done nothing but leave me with Mail broken. Any ideas? I had to use my Windows laptop to do this email.
