Yes, this was the problem. In system preferences/accessibility/I can’t remember
LOL I found typing feedback and unchecked it. I went into text edit and started
typing but voiceover will not speak anything I went into voiceover utility and
found all the typing settings and set them. Now everything works finally as it
should. All the problems occurred from the system Voice preferences. Thank God
for you and Calvin everything finally works perfectly. I still have a problem
with the Greek language but I think I have to call apple accessibility and
report this to them. When I type in Greek I can hear the characters and when I
space I hear the word that I have typed. but when I VO up-and-down arrow to
read the sentence the Greek voice is unable to read the sentence. it reads
character for character. To me that tells me that the Greek voice is broken and
that I should call apple accessibility.
Ian and Calvin thank you very much for solving my problem after so many months.
Three lists and one WhatsApp group for the Mac and nobody was able to help you
are the two people that knew what was going on or at least pointed me in the
right direction. My deepest gratitude thank you for everything. I would like to
keep writing this email and just keep saying thank you that’s how grateful I
am. OK now stopping myself.

Ha, I was typing my response as yours was coming in, similar question about
which voice was which. Here is my guess as to the mystery of the double
voice.
System voice is set to speak typing feedback, change this as per my other
email.
Voiceover is set to none for typing feedback, but is still set to announce
modifier keys, like control.
So when our intrepid new user Zoe types, system voice gives feedback, but
Voiceover is announcing the modifier keys.
I think changing the setting for system voice I outlined in the other email
should help, giving all control back to Voiceover.
Zoe, if Kelvin is away I’ll try to jump in. I think he’s in Australia or New
Zealand or Antarctica based on his time zone, I’m in Western Canada, so you
may notice a difference in response time depending on where you are.
Cheers,
Ian

Zoe, good to hear some progress, still a bit of a mystery, I have never had
two voices speak at the same time.
Are they the same voice ? Is the system voice set up in accessibility the
same as your voice over default voice set up in the voice over utility.
Which one is now dominant and which one is giving the repeat, try changing
the system voice to test.
In verbosity under announcements, is announce when a modifier key is pressed
checked or unchecked ?

Eep exploring, I am going to be away from my computer for a few days so will

Hi Calvin, thank you so much for helping me. I saw your message late last
night but I was too tired to go investigate. This morning I sat at the Mac
and did as you said. Unfortunately it would not give me an edit button for
the Greek language but it definitely did give me an edit button for the
English. I changed everything in there to the voice that I want, my choice
is Samantha. I also went into the verbosity settings and changed some
things there.
One of the things I changed in the verbosity was when typing I changed it
to do nothing. Even though in my mind that doesn’t make sense that didsolve
the problem of hearing 2 voices when I type. Now when I type I only hear
one voice. This is good. The only thing I was not able to solve is that
when I hit the control key I still hear two voices so if I want to hit
control option command and the arrow keys to choose words or sentences or
lines etc. I hear the control key being spoken by two voices, and the rest
of the keys are spoken by one voice. Any ideas how to stop to voices from
saying control? This is the most help I have gotten to solve my problem and
I am extremely grateful. Thank you so so much from the bottom of my heart.

Not sure what is happening, you say you hear two different voices at the
same time.
I do think there is a straight-forward reason for this though.
As well as the speech and voices in accessibility you also have control
and choices in the voice over utility, press vo + f8 to open.
Go into the speech category and tick voices.
Go into the customise language list table.
click on edit.
click on additional voice options.
Here you have options for deffault voices for content, status, type,
attributes and voice over menu.
I would explore here, what voice is selected for each category, reduce
volume on one of them and see if one of the two voices you are getting
goes lower.
If so, this may give some indication as to what is happening.

Hi everybody, hope you’re doing well. Just to remind everybody I am a
beginner on the Mac. I have asked this question on a few other lists and
nobody seems to know what the problem is. I was told to call Apple
accessibility but I thought I would ask you guys as well just in case I
get lucky and somebody knows how to solve this.
The problem started when I upgraded to Catalina.
I am bilingual and need to use the Greek voice called Melina on the Mac.
I soon realized I have two problems, one the Greek voice doesn’t work
properly on the Mac and cannot read the Greek. I don’t think anybody on
any list can do anything about that. I think I do need to call apple
accessibility for that issue. My main problem is that I hear two voices
speaking at the same time. I went into system
preferences/accessibility/speech and unchecked all boxes. I also
unchecked all the voices. The Mac asked me if I want to delete the voices
or keep them. I chose to keep them. However everything is unchecked But I
still hear two voices. If I press control option command shift and the
arrow keys and choose Alex for example as my main voice over voice, when
I hit the modifier keys I hear Samantha‘s voice and when I hit a letter
on the keyboard I hear Alex‘s voice. If IM in text edit and I begin to
type, I hear both Samantha and Alex. No one seems to know how to solve
this. Any ideas?

Yup, I did the upgrade, and things were just fine for a few days, then
this happened. Right now I’m working on the premis that my maxed out
google drive is trying to share folders with my hard drive even though
I told it not too. It may have been trying this before I made the
change, and still trying to accomplish it’s task before it lets the new
settings take effect.
