Hmmm, curious. What version of Mac OS are you using? I have a recollection
of a speech category, but it’s not there now, so I’m not sure if I’m looking
at a different section or if a recent upgrade made changes. Doesn’t mean it
can’t be fixed, just that a different approach is needed.

Are the two voices you hear when you hit keys like control the same voice?
By that I mean are you getting an echo of your Samantha voice, or is it a
different voice like Alex? There are settings which allow features to be
read by the system voice. For example when I’m in a Zoom session the
notifications about participants joining are read out by the system voice,
and are spoken regardless of what Voiceover is doing, so I get two voices
at the same time.
If this is the case, you’ll need to change system voice notifications. This
is because speech output is available for people not using Voiceover, so
you need to turn it on and off separately.
Go to system preferences, open accessibility.
Interact with the features table.
In the features table, go to spoken content, not voiceover.
Stop interacting with the features table.
VO arrow over to the options, you’ll find check boxes for speak
announcements, speak items under the pointer etc.
In the options there is an item for speak typing feedback, uncheck this and
your system voice should stop talking while you type.
You can then go to the voiceover utility and set your typing feedback so
that it is controlled with Voiceover, not the system voice.
Hope this helps.

Hi Calvin, thank you so much for helping me. I saw your message late last
night but I was too tired to go investigate. This morning I sat at the Mac
and did as you said. Unfortunately it would not give me an edit button for
the Greek language but it definitely did give me an edit button for the
English. I changed everything in there to the voice that I want, my choice
is Samantha. I also went into the verbosity settings and changed some
things there.
One of the things I changed in the verbosity was when typing I changed it
to do nothing. Even though in my mind that doesn’t make sense that
didsolve the problem of hearing 2 voices when I type. Now when I type I
only hear one voice. This is good. The only thing I was not able to solve
is that when I hit the control key I still hear two voices so if I want to
hit control option command and the arrow keys to choose words or sentences
or lines etc. I hear the control key being spoken by two voices, and the
rest of the keys are spoken by one voice. Any ideas how to stop to voices
from saying control? This is the most help I have gotten to solve my
problem and I am extremely grateful. Thank you so so much from the bottom
of my heart.

Not sure what is happening, you say you hear two different voices at the
same time.
I do think there is a straight-forward reason for this though.
As well as the speech and voices in accessibility you also have control
and choices in the voice over utility, press vo + f8 to open.
Go into the speech category and tick voices.
Go into the customise language list table.
click on edit.
click on additional voice options.
Here you have options for deffault voices for content, status, type,
attributes and voice over menu.
I would explore here, what voice is selected for each category, reduce
volume on one of them and see if one of the two voices you are getting
goes lower.
If so, this may give some indication as to what is happening.

Hi everybody, hope you’re doing well. Just to remind everybody I am a
beginner on the Mac. I have asked this question on a few other lists and
nobody seems to know what the problem is. I was told to call Apple
accessibility but I thought I would ask you guys as well just in case I
get lucky and somebody knows how to solve this.
The problem started when I upgraded to Catalina.
I am bilingual and need to use the Greek voice called Melina on the Mac.
I soon realized I have two problems, one the Greek voice doesn’t work
properly on the Mac and cannot read the Greek. I don’t think anybody on
any list can do anything about that. I think I do need to call apple
accessibility for that issue. My main problem is that I hear two voices
speaking at the same time. I went into system
preferences/accessibility/speech and unchecked all boxes. I also
unchecked all the voices. The Mac asked me if I want to delete the
voices or keep them. I chose to keep them. However everything is
unchecked But I still hear two voices. If I press control option command
shift and the arrow keys and choose Alex for example as my main voice
over voice, when I hit the modifier keys I hear Samantha‘s voice and
when I hit a letter on the keyboard I hear Alex‘s voice. If IM in text
edit and I begin to type, I hear both Samantha and Alex. No one seems to
know how to solve this. Any ideas?

Yup, I did the upgrade, and things were just fine for a few days, then
this happened. Right now I’m working on the premis that my maxed out

I told it not too. It may have been trying this before I made the
change, and still trying to accomplish it’s task before it lets the
new settings take effect.
