I'm still having a couple of serious problems with Lion. I've installed it by direct download from the ap store on my hard drive and by burning a dvd on one of my external drives and the same problems occur in both places.

1. I cannot access Startup Disks in System Preferences; System Preferences goes busy and eventually has no windows. However, I know I have alternatives for startup disks because if I reboot and hold the option key down I can get to startup disks to choose from. Even if I detach all external drives, I stil can not get startup disk in System Preferences with the hard drive as the only drive showing.

2. It doesn't really appear that I can do permissions. Disk Utility claims to be doing repair permissions but that one line is all I ever see and I've left it on for hours!!!

So I thought I'd try a fresh download of Lion and reinstall. Given that Abbyy doesn't work in Lion, I don't want to sacrifice my remaining two external drives to Lion conversion just to find out what is going on. But when I go to the app store, install is dimmed because I've already installed it. So how do I redownload it? Should I try redownloading and reinstalling if I can? My thought is that maybe there was something wrong with the download though that doesn't seem super likely. Does anybody have other sugestions? I did post this to another Mac list and only one person replied, thinking it might be a spotlight indexing problem because of my external drives but I don't think so since it does the same without external drives. I've also googled. If this is too OT and anybody has suggestions, you can email me privately. I'd like to go on to Lion but it's getting to the point where I'm wasting too much time on this project!!!

Thanks.
