Further to learning the finder, learn the different views and how VoiceOver 
functions with them. some folks like to operate in list view, some in column 
view, and things run smoother if you can switch between them.  

I learned this being on tech support with Apple, and the guy was good at 
picking up which view I was in and talking through the finder appropriately.
