I'm not John, but the first thing you need is some kind of access to Windows, like you or a friend. Then you need to go to msn.messenger.com and get an account if you don't have one already. Then still on the windows machine you need to goto www.jabber.org and go to the client list and download exodus for windows and install it. This seems to be the easiest one to set up the accounts for jabber and msn on. First you need to find a public jabber server that contains a msn gateway. This is the hardest part so use the one I use at jabber.anywise.com . So choose a user name and when exodus asks you for a jabber account just put in like keith@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and then choose a password. Check the box for create a new account and log in. If all went well exidous should have created an account on the server. You don't need to do this next step I don't think but you should. Go to the tools menu in exodus and find the option to update your profile. Now for the msn gateway. Still using exodus go to the exodus/register with a service menu. You should find an edit box for entering a service name. Fill in msn.jabber.anywise.com and hit ok. A screen will pop up telling you what's going on, just select next. The next screen is for entering your msn user name and password. Hit next and you should see a confirmation screen. Hit finish if everything went well. You can now uninstall exodus and get back on the mac. Go into ichat preferences and pick the accounts tab. Choose to add a new account. The default is to create a .mac account but you want to change that to a jabber account. Fill in your jabber id and password and check the appropriate boxes and don't mess with anything else. Close the preferences window and you should see your account online. If you interact with your buddylist table you should see contacts. The way you can tell a jabber contact from a msn contact is like this timfgrady@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for jabber and timfgrady%msn.com for msn. Remember that with your msn contacts you can only text chat. There is another way to do this that involves adding a server to your machine but this is the only way to do it using a public jabber server. I do wish there were a mac client that could create a jabber account and search for service gateways but I don't know of any.

John,

First of all, please forgive me, I think I spelled your last name rong.

I would like to know more about Jabber.

1: Does it speak automaticly as AIM does?

2: Can you tell me where I can find the information to set it up?

Our son and daughter are in Japan and they have a MSN account and don't seem to be inclined to get an AIM account.

Thanks.
