Just interact with the messages table and browse your messages by subject or sender or whatever you like. It is really annoying to just arrow down the table without interacting with it because it tells you all those things...

I recommend mail and only mail. it is a stunning email interface, comes with the os and of course is free within the limits of the cost of the os. you could use pine if you like but that means dealing with the terminal issues we all know and love. come to think of it, you can even use the mail program built into terminal or the unix part of the mac if you like.
