you can turn off the buddy text column under columns in view and any of the others you don't want to hear. you can pick a column to use to read through using vo keys by interacting with the messages table and moving through till you hear the column you want.

I recommend mail and only mail. it is a stunning email interface, comes with the os and of course is free within the limits of the cost of the os. you could use pine if you like but that means dealing with the terminal issues we all know and love. come to think of it, you can even use the mail program built into terminal or the unix part of the mac if you like.Hth!
