Hi Chris
Unfortunately Apple TV isn't accessible at this time. I'm planning on getting one when I have some spare cash, and seeing if I can shoehorn VO onto it. It runs a modified OS X with front row as its interface, so it might at least be possible to do this. I have no idea if it will work, but won't know until I try.

Hi,

I've read a bunch about Apple TV but nothing that even mentions VO. Can one control the Apple tV thing using VO on their Macintosh?

There are some other similar products that expose an html interface that work great with screen readers on all platforms including Macintosh. I just really like the Apple TV solution as it already knows about other Apple Devices (for backups and such) and has a very attractive price tag.

There is a specific api for the dvd player that will load the audio description track if there is one on the dvd. However, my attempts to make this work in softcon dvd player met with less than resounding success. I.E. I couldn't get it to work. I did send a message to apple, and received no response, and that's when I implemented the L keystroke to select the next language in the list of available languages (yes, the audio description track is listed as a separate language on discs that have it) I still don't know why setting it directly didn't work, and perhaps I should try again using the latest leopard install, and see if it works, but under tiger, it failed miserably. I didn't make it an official request for support, but perhaps if I try it again, and it still doesn't work, I will do so, since I've not used any of my adc select member perks yet, and an apple provided programming ticket is one of those perks. (the last time I used one of those, apple wound fixing a bug in the dvd apis relating to opening dvd images on disk).

A while back, I had written to accessibility@xxxxxxxxx, with a suggestion on possibly finding solutions to access DVD's with audio descriptions. They wrote back andexplained how to go through menus, which I already knew; evidently the techniciandidn't understand that we just can't select the audio description on the DVD, simply by pressingVO+shift+M, andtrying to find the designated selection for audio description on a DVD. I wrote back to them and explained that if the DVD movie has it, why couldn't Voiceover alert us to onscreen prompts so that we can choose whether or not wewant to use them. Is it doable? I feel that, if any company can, Apple would do it; look what they have already done with Voiceover in less than four years. Richie Gardenhire, Anchorage, Alaska.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.
