VoiceOver was acting strange with mail just now after I woke my computer up. I
had to close mail and reopen. That seems to have cleared up the issue for now.

message which I can now read. Editing is a bit finicky though as letters are
read wrong and trying to read the word you are on reads the first one you wrote
etc. Over all this OS is becoming to be a mess and is tempting me to ditch mac
