As you have been told, this is a great idea for security purposes. I have my
laptop set up with File Vault enabled.
For older Macs, when you turn on VoiceOver with command-F5, you will hear a
beep. Type your user name and hit enter. If you hear another long beep, you
typed it wrong. If you hear two beeps, type your password and hit enter. Three
beeps indicates you are in. Two long beeps mean try the password again.
If you have a newer Mac, the user name and password prompts are spoken.
Note that as Scott said, try to make your user name just your first name or
something short so you limit the amount of typing.

I have heard that it is a good thing for security to encrypt my hard drive
using FileVault. I am using a 2010 MacBook Pro running El Capitan. Does
encryption affect VoiceOver? I heard that there is a screen that comes up
where you need to type in your code before The computer boots up. Also, is it
fairly easy to encrypt The hard drive?
Or should I just consider encrypted my back up hard drive?
