Jon reminded me that in addition to the Synology FTP server that I have at my
studio, I also have a cloud FTP server like he mentioned.  I pay $100 a year to
A2hosting.com for web hosting but just use the web server's FTP server for
getting files from River of Life Church in San Jose.  They send me programming
in Chinese.  I also use automated scripts to FTP the files from the server to
my Masterplay computer.  I had set up the web FTP server before I set up my own
Synology FTP server.  The drawback of the web FTP server is that it doesn't
have nearly the storage as my Synology FTP server.

I see the Amazon has the older vintage Synology servers on sale for $150.  You
can easily purchase two 2TB drives and set it up as a redundant RAID system.
Also, you can add an external USB 2 TB drive and have it run automatically
weekly backups. I really like my Synology server.  It is the size of a football
and makes it convenient for people to send me files.  Also, it is separate from
my Masterplay system.  I don't want people directly accessing my Masterplay and
dumping files it on it.

Like Gil, in the past, I had a similar setup and ran a public FTP server - not
that hard to set up.

In my case, I used an old XP computer.  I worked from my home office and would
FTP my encoded MPEG files directly to my playout server, which was located in a
remote building about 25 miles away.  I didn't have a static IP there - I used
dyndns.com<http://dyndns.com>, which is similar to noip.com<http://noip.com>.
The setup worked really well.

However, if you'd rather not run your own FTP server, you can use a web hosting
service to provide a FTP server in the cloud.  If you already have a web site,
you probably have this capability.  Check to see if you have the ability to
create individual FTP accounts.  If so, you can create a user account and
upload your video files there.  You would give stations the credentials to
access this FTP account.  Note that you probably would have a storage limit as
defined by your web hosting package.

Alternative 3:

If you already have a website, try creating a new folder where you'd like to
make your video files available.  Upload some files using FTP, but don't upload
an "index.html" file there.  If you go to that location using a web browser,
(for example, http://www.ridgelinetv.net/temp_wx/ ;) you likely will see
something like this:

Since there is no HTML file in this folder, most web servers will just return a
directory listing.  As you can see, you click on those files to either view in
the browser or right-click to download.  However, some web servers might not
show this listing depending on how the host has set it up.  But if this works,
you have an easy was to make files available to other stations.

address.

Hi Rick,

I use a Synology Disk Station DS220+ for an FTP server.  They are only $300 on
Amazon.  I ask content providers to upload mp4 files to the FTP server.  I then
set Windows Tasks to automatically copy over the files from the FTP server into
Masterplay.

Rick,

If you are going to get all the shows together and put them on an SD card, why
not just put them on a FTP server? That would make timely show updates much
easier to handle.

My head is recovering from the heavy question.  Downloading is easy as you say
and having an SD disk is beneficial for less work.  Either way is good, but for

   Have a question to bounce off your heads. I am trying to create programs for
stations as an alternative to Public domain shows. My question is would a
station rather download shows off You Tube, plug in a prefab playlist that
would turn it into a TV show OR have an SD disk mailed to them to download the
complete show and then mail it to the next station?

   Downloading the You Tube videos means any station anywhere could air it
within minutes but it takes a little more work as they also have to download
bumps, open, and close. The complete show means less work but you have to wait
for it to get to you. Putting the shows on an SD disk means the shows can be
sent around only paying for a stamp.

   I have a demo of the You Tube “Carpet Bagger” running on a Masterplay
computer  here in my office and hope to move it to air next week.

   I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
