On March 6th I had a Great Purple Hairstreak nectaring on the blossoms
of my dad's plum trees here in Jena, La Salle Parish. Today (3/8/20) I
thought I saw it again but the sighting was too brief. However, at this
same location, I saw my FOS White-M Hairstreak and Juniper Hairstreaks. The
White-M was nectaring in a blooming sweet olive tree (third or fourth time
I've seen the species at this location in March, starting in 2017). The
Juniper Hairstreaks were chasing each other around the top of the same
cedar tree they've been in since 2017 (flights seen in March of 2017, 2018,
2019, 2020, and July of 2017, if memory serves).
Also busy in the plum blossoms for the past couple of weeks are
Grapevine Epimenis Moths. 3 or 4 were seen today. Also saw 1 or 2
Eight-spotted Forester Moths nectaring on plum blossoms today. A few days
ago I saw a Nessus Sphinx nectaring in the plum trees.

-Red-banded Hairstreak - 3 (fos was a few days ago, today's were nectaring
on plum, sweet olive, maybe buttercup)
-American Snout - 3 (they've been common at this location since sometime
back in Feb., nectaring on sweet olive and plum)
-Monarch - 1 (nectaring on Redbud, one also seen here on 3/6/20)
-Pearl Crescent - 3 fresh
-Grapevine Epimenis Moth - 3-4
-Eight-spotted Forester Moth - 1-2
Stuff's starting to stir!

I second Craig's sentiment -- I'm so ready for butterflying season to
start. Today I birded Catahoula NWR and saw a few butterflies while out
there. At Bushley Bayou Unit I saw 2 Goatweed Leafwings and a few of what
appeared to be American Snout flying off before I got good looks. Then at
the HQ Unit saw 2 Cloudless Sulphurs and a Common Buckeye. Warm afternoon
peaking at 77 F.; sunny.

My azaleas started blooming this week. Today I saw 2 male Cloudless
Sulphurs
around those blooms. I hope they are a harbinger of an early spring. I'm so
ready to get into the field.
